Intercoms are a very nice convenience.  They allow you to call a single station or to broadcast a message to all stations.  You can use an intercom station as a room monitor, such as for listening in to the nursery.  Intercoms can also allow you to play background music throughout the house.  Finally, an intercom system can let you talk to the visitor at the front door from any station in the house.

If you will be installing a phone system or whole-house audio system, then one of them may be able to function as your intercom too.  It all depends on what features you need and how you plan to use the system.
